| Regional Information |
|
The surrounding area is a perfect destination for anyone seeking all year round activities, whether it's a gentle amble or energising mountain biking across the rugged hills, the spectacular countryside provides an inspiring backdrop for it all.
The nearby 70 square mile estate of the flooded Elan Valley is spectacularly beautiful and is home to some of Britain's most rare wildlife and plants along with magnificent engineering to create a fantastic experience whatever your choice of activity. Scenic hills and valleys that are criss-crossed with footpaths, make it ideal for walkers who appreciate the unspoilt beauty of the magnificent mountain scenery, natural history and calming peace of the countryside. Hundreds of miles of bridleways and quiet lanes, makes this the ideal base for cyclists of all ages and abilities to explore the area. Cycle hire is available and allows you to explore the spectacular views including the 13km (8mile) Elan Trail which runs through scenic countryside around the Elan Valley reservoirs. It is a safe and dedicated trail for all visitors, from walkers, cyclists to wheelchair users and children.
Hanging oak forests, rocky outcrops and unpolluted farmland make this the best place in the country to watch rarities such as red kites, peregrines, pied flycatchers and redstarts.
The surrounding countryside is home to the famous Red Kite and daily feeding can be seen at the UK's leading Red Kite Centre, Gigrin Farm just six miles away. Over 150 kites gather for the daily afternoon feeding sessions at Gigrin Kite Centre, not to mention scores of buzzards and ravens.
Amongst the other activities nearby why not visit the local Leisure Centre which is fully equipped with a gym, squash courts, pool and solarium. For many years Welsh Royal Crystal has drawn in crowds from far and wide . Along with its on site showroom you can observe the skills of glass blowing by the nearby Elan Glass Studio. Fifteen minutes away is Gilfach Nature Reserve where you can enjoy a unique wildlife experience set in 200 acres of dramatic countryside with a tumbling upland river, sessile oak woodland, meadows and upland moorland. The reserve provides an opportunity to explore nature's rich diversity, from otters to polecats, and discover a lovingly restored Welsh longhouse Powys is an extensive, largely upland and extremely rural county covering 2000 square miles, that is about a quarter of the area of Wales. With only 1 person in every 10 acres (4 hectares) it is one of the most sparsely populated local authority areas in England and Wales. The county has tremendous landscape assets, from the dramatic mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the rolling hills of Radnor Forest to the Berwyn Mountains in the north, and some of Britain's most spectacular river valleys - the Severn, Wye and Usk - sweeping through its glorious scenery.

| Information specific to the town/village |

The name Abbeycwmhir derives from the Cistercian monastery built here in 1143 and translates as Abbey in the long (hir) valley (cwm). Abbeycwmhir is also the burial place of the last native Prince of Wales "Llewellyn the Last".His head was taken to London and his body buried here, there is a memorial stone for him in the ruins of the old Abbey.
A warm welcome awaits you on visiting Abbeycwmhir from a small vibrant predominently farming community amongst breathtaking scenery in this historic village.
The cottage is positioned in the centre of the village opposite the church and next to the pub and has been recently converted (finished July 2003) from an old tailor's shop into holiday accomodation, incorporating and enhancing many of the original features including intricate beams and original flooring.
The village sits in the base of the valley close to the Clewedog brook and is surrounded by hills.Glyndwrs Way national walking trail and cycle route 25 pass through the village making it an ideal location for these activities
