The Costa Blanca is one of the most mountainous areas in Europe with some impressive peaks right on the coast. A good way to explore these mountains if you are reasonably fit and have time free on Saturday is to buy a copy of the Costa Blanca News and look up the Costa Blanca Mountain Walkers. You drive to their meeting place and enjoy a guided walk with good company among some wonderful mountain scenery. The Guadalest Valley and the surrounding area provide excellent road cycling and mountain biking. You can tackle the challenging hills, exhilarating descents, or just take it easy along the nearby "Greenways" (converted railway lines).

Guadalest enjoys one of the most spectacular locations of any village in Spain, set high up on a pinnacle and carved out of a mountain top in the midst of truly stunning scenery. It has a population of only 200 but is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain.
Of Islamic origin, Guadalest was a military stronghold of great strategic importance and is the site of several ancient castles, the remains of which can still be seen today - although earthquakes and battles during the War of Spanish Succession (early 18th Century) have reduced these castles to little more than shells.
One of its most famous landmarks is the Peñon de La Alcalá tower rising high above the village to watch over the valley below.

From Alicante airport take he A-7 motorway heading towards Valencia. Get off at Junction 65 and head towards Callosa. Look out for signposts to Guadalest. There is a toll on the motorway (approx 3 euros).
