Description of property |

|
|
|
| |
Built in 1903, this is a very pretty house on two storeys. Upstairs is a large shaded terrace leading to a wooden-floored double bedroom with en-suite bathroom.
The old wine press has two roof terraces which look out over the hills (more a semi-circular ridge) which partly encircle our village of Gavalohori to the south. The Greek word 'gavalo' means bowl, which describes the setting well.
The larger terrace measures 5m x 2.5m, has shade and seating and plenty of room to sit out with a table. It faces south and west so you get a great view of sunset over the surrounding olive groves.
The smaller adjoins the upstairs en-suite bathroom and faces south and east so you can see the sun rise should you wish to get up early! It measures about 2m square, room for two people to sit out.
There is also a courtyard to the side of the house, accessed by french windows from the living room, which is surrounded by stone walls and therefore totally private. This measures about 8m x 3.5m and contains garden table and chairs, a large parasol and barbecue.
Downstairs the living room has two traditional banquette-style single beds, an open log fire and features french windows to the side garden courtyard and an en-suite shower room.
The house has outdoor sunshades and garden furniture for summer.

| Regional Information |
|
The district of Apokoronas is in the north-eastern corner of the Chania region at the foot of the White Mountains, one of the greenest regions of Crete. Apokoronas contains some interesting sights, such as Lake Kournas, the island's only freshwater lake, gorges including the stunning Samaria gorge, picturesque villages and small beach resorts.
Almirida is our nearest beach. Once a small fishing village it is now a lively seaside resort with many delightful tavernas.
Windsurfers, catamarans & kayaks can be hired by the hour from a French sailing school. The beach is sandy and shelves gently, making it ideal for small children. There are also plenty of other quiet sandy beaches close by.
The second city in Crete, Chania is a modern commercial city with its roots deep in the past. The old town is an archaeological wonderland with architecturally unique buildings reflecting a history of foreign domination; Venetian, Turkish as well as Cretan. There are two harbours which are packed with restaurants and shops. You can take a boat trip, visit the nautical museum, or just wander around the narrow back streets. The Agora market has fish, meat, bakers and fruit stalls. The Saturday street market which runs down towards the sea, close to the Agora is the best place to find produce straight from the fields.

| Information specific to the town/village |
|
Still very much a rural village and with a long history reflected in its buildings & archaeological sites. There is a fascinating old olive mill, with original workings. The nearby Folk Museum chronicles the history of the village, and its former way of life. The local Women’s Co-operative are actively reviving traditional handicrafts, examples of which can be bought in their shop in the village square. A small café close to the museum is a renovated Turkish kafeneon.
Gavalohori was once a sizeable town and at one time there were many such kafeneons. Now there is only one – a place where traditionally the men sit & drink raki or coffee & discuss the issues of the world. There are two tavernas & two café/snack bars, and now a new patisserie, as well as several small shops and a bakery.

The famous Samaria gorge is just to the south and there are also many less well-known gorges such as Imbros Gorge, which runs parallel to Samaria. The Apokoronas area is wonderful for walking & cycling, especially in the Spring & Autumn. We have written out some circular walks and cycling routes from the houses.
