| Regional Information |
|
NORMANDY is a beautiful region of France, easily accessible from the UK and yet a world away. It is a verdant land of delightful scenery, with friendly local people and of course delicious food and wine. The pace of life is slow. Long leisurely lunches under a shady tree or in a little restaurant are an integral part of the day.
THE BAY OF MONT ST MICHEL has many beaches and sights typical of the Normandy region. A little further west brings you to the edge of Brittany and the beautiful seaside town of CANCALE celebrated for its oyster farms. The coast road continues past some glorious beaches to the magnificent walled city of ST MALO with its abundant shops and seafood restaurants.
AVRANCHES Just a short drive away Avranches has some wonderful streets for shopping, garden admirers and historians alike. From The Jardin des Plantes is a fantastic view across the bay of le Mont St Michel.
ST JAMES Again a short drive and is home to the American World War 2 Cemetary.
ST HILAIRE DU HARCOUET to be found 9km away. Whilst a lot larger than Ducey it has certainly not lost its charm. With numerous bars and restaurants, the pavement culture is much in evidence. The local Wednesday market here is the biggest weekly agricultural market in Normandy.
There's still so much more to do: benefit from the sea air on the nearby stretches of sandy beach between Genets and Granville. Visit France's premier spa town of Bagnoles De L'Orne or the medieval town of Fougeres. Walks and cycle routes through nearby National Park Forests. Watch coppersmiths/bellmakers at Villedieu-Les-Poeles which is also home to the Zoo de Champrepus. Take a boat trip down the river Rance visiting the medieval town of Dinan. Further a field a day trip can take you all round the D-Day beaches and Bayeux Tapestry or a boat trip can take you to the islands of Jersey or Guernsey

Le Fresne is situated in a rural position, surrounded by farmland, in a peaceful hamlet and close to the Lac de Vezins.
DUCEY 7 km away is our nearest town. It is host to the historical Montgommery Chateau which is often open to the public for exhibitions and tours. During the summer months the grounds are surrounded by magnificent floral displays. The staff of the Tourist information Office which is located opposite the chateau are extremely helpful in providing information about this and other attractions both in and around Ducey.

Base de Loisirs La Mazure aux Biards, (5kms) a leisure and water sports activity centre. Sailing, wind surfing, canoeing, and on land: tennis, pétanque, and archery to name a few.
Parc de Loisirs l'Ange Michel, (9kms) around 30 activities including: aquasplash, quadbiking, childrens’ amusement park, and bumper boats.

Fishing, coarse fishing is well catered for locally. A day ticket is available but a 2 week holiday permit for 30 Euros is better value, the permits are available from Ducey and St. Hilaire-du-Harcouet and are easy to obtain.
On the Lac de Vezins, Pike, Zander and Perch are the target of local fishermen, mainly because they eat them. However other fish such as Carp, Bream and Roach are possible.

From the Lac de Vezins towards the Barrage de Roche qui Bois is classed as a category 2 river and big Bream and Chubb are possible. Upstream of the barrage, through Ducey and towards the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel the river Selune is a category 1 river and is fly-fished for Salmon and Sea Trout

Cycling, for the active, discover Manche on a cycle. The Bay of Mont Saint-Michel has 12 véloroutes, of differing degrees of difficulty. For example we are actually situated on the "Circuit des lacs", a mere 22kms!
Dégustation, Normandy is renowned for it’s cheese and Cider. Local "farm" shops abound for tasting of locally produced cheeses and cider based products. Whilst Calvados may be an acquired taste the fortified cider, Pommeau makes a lovely aperitif and the Cidre Bouché (slightly sparkling) makes a refreshing lunchtime drink.
